“A Wiffle Ball! Cool!”
— Jim Thome
That was his reaction when we asked him to sign a Wiffle Ball.
Jim Thome was once voted the nicest person in baseball, and we can’t argue with that result. Thome is one of several Baseball Hall of Famers that autographed a plastic baseball for our private collection. However, he is the only member of the Hall of Fame that has signed an official Wiffle Ball for us. The rest of the Hall of Fame autographs in our collection are on a different kind of ball.
The six-foot-four Thome bashed 612 home runs over 22 seasons. He started his career as a third baseman and played there for six years! He even won a Silver Slugger Award as a third baseman. In 1997, he moved to first base where he is perhaps best known.
Toward the end of his career, Thome spent most of his time as a designated hitter. During those years, it seemed like each time he stepped up to the plate he either walked, struck out, or hit a home run.
We appreciate Jim Thome meeting with our staff to give us a collectible that we will treasure forever.
The Wiffle Ball is autographed by Brian Buscher too.
